Visiting A Torrent Website? Might get 3 years in Jail

The government of India after once banning 857 porn websites now wants to send people to jail if they even view Torrent website or a blocked URL. In simple words in India you are not allowed to watch or download files that are copyrighted.

 

The viewer will be fined up to INR 3,00,000 ($4468) and will be imprisoned for 3 years under 1957 Copyright act. As India Today reported, this punishment is not even for downloading or distributing content which has violated the copyright.

It means in case if the viewer’s even though are viewing legal information on this websites would be in trouble.

The below displayed is the message flashing on blocked websites says,

 

“This URL has been blocked under the instructions of the Competent Government Authority or in compliance with the orders of a Court of competent jurisdiction. Viewing, downloading, exhibiting or duplicating an illicit copy of the contents of this URL is punishable as an offense under the laws of India, including but not limited to under Sections 63, 63-A, 65 and 65-A of the Copyright Act, 1957 which prescribe imprisonment for 3 years and also fine of up to Rs. 3,00,000/-. Any person aggrieved by any such blocking of this URL may contact at urlblock@tatacommunications.com who will, within 48 hours, provide you the details of relevant proceedings under which you can approach the relevant High Court or Authority for redressal of your grievance”.

 

Government has already started to seek help of companies like Tata Communications and Airtel in order to attain their “Website Blocking” Goal.

 

Blocking illegal websites is a good step and the message seems threatening too. However its yet not clear on how this law is going to be practically imposed.The users of Internet in India need to be careful while browsing and better to stay away from blocked websites.
